Frequently Asked Questions

The information in your credit report may be used by members of Equifax Canada who have permissible purpose and have your consent or are otherwise authorized by law to access your credit report. Under current law, permissible purpose includes things like applying for a mortgage, loan, credit card or other form of credit, applying for a job or applying to rent an apartment.

Equifax members (lenders and creditors) may use credit reports as part of their decision-making process to decide whether to extend you credit - and at what terms. Your credit report may also be used by other companies, such as rental or insurance companies, in helping them make risk decisions. For these reasons, it's important to check your credit reports regularly to ensure the information in them is accurate and complete.

Your Equifax Canada credit report is also used to offer and provide you with Equifax Global Consumer Solutions products and services. For information about how your Equifax credit report is collected, used and disclosed, please review the Privacy Policy.

What is the difference between Equifax Canada Co. ("ECC") and Equifax Consumer Services LLC ("ECS") ?

ECC and ECS are separate Equifax companies that operate in different physical locations and provide different products and services.

ECS is located in the United States and it obtains information from ECC to help ECC deliver credit monitoring and other personal products directly to Canadian consumers.

ECC is located in Canada and is a registered Canadian credit reporting agency that is regulated by federal and provincial authorities that govern privacy and credit reporting legislation. This means that ECC maintains a database of credit information provided by credit grantors and other sources so that a credit report and related products (e.g. credit scores) can be compiled and delivered to the recipients that you have provided consent to and/or who are authorized by law to receive them. ECC also offers credit monitoring and other personal products to you online. In order to deliver your products to you, ECC works with its affiliate ECS. ECS provides the platform and technology through which your personal products are delivered. As a result, your Equifax credit report and/or Equifax credit score is securely received, processed and stored by ECS.

As a Canadian consumer, you can receive a free Equifax credit report and Equifax credit score without your information being processed in the United States by visiting one of our consumer centres in person during operating hours, by submitting a request for delivery by mail, or online.

In our role as a registered credit reporting agency, ECC serves as a consumer advocate, promoter of financial literacy, and steward of credit information. To learn more about ECC's privacy practices, please review our Privacy Policy.

I have dual citizenship with the United States. Can I merge my Canadian credit report with my U.S. credit report?

Unfortunately, you cannot merge your Canadian and U.S. credit reports because of differences in U.S. and Canadian laws. The Equifax group of companies includes Equifax Canada Co., which is a registered Canadian credit bureau that maintains Canadian credit report information, and Equifax Information Services LLC, which is a credit bureau that maintains U.S. credit report information. In addition, there are other credit bureaus in both the United States and Canada that also maintain credit report information separately.
